How to deal when you have sick kids

Having sick kids can be a stressful and overwhelming time. Here's a few tips on how to remain sane and ensure they get well as soon as possible.

1. Listen to your gut. If you think a doctor or hospital visit is warranted, don't hesitate. It's much better to be safe than sorry and it will hopefully help bring your stress levels down, knowing you have taken every precaution. My younger sister had pneumonia a while back. We could've written it off as a normal cold symptoms but thankfully my mum had an instinct that something else was up so off to the hospital she went.

2. Prioritise your own well-being. It's crucial to prioritise your own self-care when taking care of sick kids. Make sure you're getting enough rest, eating nutritious meals, and staying hydrated. Take short breaks whenever possible to relax and recharge. Remember, you need to be in good health to provide the best care for your children.

3. Seek support. Don't hesitate to ask for help or seek support from your partner, family members, friends, or neighbours. Reach out to them for assistance with tasks like picking up groceries, preparing meals, or watching the kids for a while. Sharing the responsibilities can alleviate some of the stress and help you maintain your sanity.

4. Manage your expectations. Recognise that your usual routine might be disrupted when your kids are sick. Accept that you may need to put certain tasks or commitments on hold temporarily. Adjust your expectations and focus on providing care and comfort to your sick child as a priority.

4. Maintain perspective. Remember that illness is temporary, and your child will eventually recover. Keep a positive mindset and remind yourself that this challenging phase will pass. Stay patient, offer words of encouragement to your child, and celebrate small improvements or milestones during their recovery. Maintaining a positive attitude can help you stay sane and create a more supportive environment for everyone involved.
